Pennsylvania Free Public Criminal Records

By Ben Kingsley

Crimes happen every day and innocent civilians are mostly on the losing end of the situation. In an attempt to keep civilians from getting victimized to criminals, the government took action by allowing civilians to view and access the documents of the public domain. Yes, there are law enforcers scattered all over the place, but if the people are well-informed of the backgrounds of the people that they are surrounded with, their and security will be better guarded. If you are in Pennsylvania, you can go over the state's official website for criminal history background information and place a formal request for Pennsylvania Criminal Records.

The webpage is referred to as the Pennsylvania Access to Criminal History. There you can find various crime-related files which, when put together, form a criminal file. An arrest file, which is created at a local police department or a county sheriff's office, is just one of the many files involved. The created file is then sent to the central repository where it is kept together with the other files.

More people are performing background checks now because of the amount of useful information they contain. Employers refer to criminal files so they can carefully select who they hire. Landlords refer to the files so they can avoid taking criminals as tenants and in turn put the lives of their other tenants in jeopardy. Parents refer to the files so that they will have a better idea of the backgrounds of the people that their children are surrounded with and not have to worry about them all the time.

Criminal records are considered public records. Therefore, any person can submit a request for them. Every person has the right to access their own criminal records, if there is any. This is to allow the checking of the information found on their records and see if there are any errors. In case there are errors found, the owner of the record can submit a formal request to correct the records. If you want to obtain the records of another person, that is another story. You have to specify your reason for wanting to access them. If the office in-charge of the records is not satisfied with your reason, you will not be given access. Also, if the record being requested for is being used for an ongoing investigation, the records will not be available for public access.

There are certain private websites that are authorized to supply criminal records to the public upon request. In order to start a search, you have to provide the name of the criminal and that person's date of birth. If you can provide more information, the higher the chances will be of finding the right record. There are certain fees for getting the records, which are not refundable regardless of the outcome of the search.

Amongst the records that make up a criminal record, Public Arrest Records are the most telling. An arrest does not always require imprisonment but it does say a lot about the arrested person. Although it cannot be concluded immediately that an arrested person is bad, it is still an area for concern. If you want to obtain the records of prisoners, you can place a request at a state's Department of Corrections.
