By Ben Kingsley

Perhaps the most eminent state in the entire world is New York as it is a center for global trade and economy which has an estimate population of 19.4 million for the year 2013. Indeed, it is the place where dreams do come true. Meeting all kinds of people is likely to happen in New York. In fact, this can be fun and exciting. However, it is imperative to put trust into the equation when trying to establish more than rapport with an individual you barely know. Thus, background checks will really be of great help in such a case. New York criminal records, among all records, provide a more detailed and substantial information about an individual in the state.

All vital records of people, according to the law of the state, can be accessed by any member of the public in need. These include criminal records. The chief repository for all criminal records in the state is the Division of Justice Criminal Services. Housed in this division are the state's criminal history fingerprint files. These files provide police departments and other legal agencies all over the state with criminal records of arrested individuals, and applicants for employment or licensure.

Under this Division operates an agency called the Criminal Identification Unit which oversees New York criminal records including all fingerprints associated with felonies or misdemeanors. To ensure accuracy of the results, all demands for copies of such records are based on fingerprints. The total processing fee is $61.50. Another office which also provides reproductions of criminal records in the state is New York State Office of Court Administration. This office proffers a statewide criminal record search for a fee of $65.

In addition, if you want to investigate specific individuals, you can refer to the New York State Unified Court System which directs the Office of Court Administration. This office fulfills applications for criminal background checks. Both entities work together hand in hand to facilitate the promotion of law and Justice within New York. In the state, any member of the public can request for criminal background checks on any person they wish to investigate, although searches are based on names only. Since December 2009, New York has hired an outside firm called L-1 Identity Solutions to do these criminal background checks.

The L-1 Identity Solutions is the one responsible for getting your fingerprints. Thus, if you want to acquire a copy of your personal record, you have to set an appointment with such company in order to have your fingerprints taken. This is requisite before you can proceed with the criminal record search which will be fingerprint-based. A request form must also be filled out. In it, you must input your personal details such as your complete name, address, and phone number. Aliases should also be included in the application request. This increases the probability of locating the record of the correct person just in case sealed records not liked with fingerprints may be traced along the search. Each alias and each date of birth is reckoned an additional search. The usual processing time takes seven to ten business days.

If you want a more efficient and a more practical way of acquiring criminal or arrest records public, instead of going through the traditional method, you can actually do it online. Simply look for independent online record providers and hire their services. You don't have to worry as they have an online database accessible anytime you need to. What's nice about this online method compared to the traditional one is that, you can obtain the records you want in a matter of minutes in lieu of the usual seven to ten business days. Best of all, you don't need to pay for every request you make. A minimal fee will be required and with that, you can already have unlimited access to their database.
