Relive History With Howard Terpning Prints

By Mamie Conrad

For many people, Native American cultures and the American West are very fascinating. This era of American history is seen as free, wild, and mysterious, and is a time that still enthralls many generations of people the world over. Howard Terpning prints depicting scenes of the American West or native cultures gained popularity during the later part of the 20th century and endures to this day.

This time period showcases many different artists talents who are likewise enamored with its allure. Paintings, illustrations, and sculptures which are originals can sell for large sums of money, with ranges depending on the specific artist. The different subject depicted include pioneer families, portraits of native Americans and frontiersman, and beautiful sweeping landscapes of the American Southwest.

The Western genre is something that includes not only paintings, but also film, TV, literature, and radio. The primary time period for this genre is the last half of the 19th century. Typically, situations depicted in this genre are the harsh life of frontier families, the surge west for wandering souls, and the exotic Native American cultures; including their struggle to maintain their identities, traditions, and culture.

The art form that is directly representative of this time period is classified as Western Art in the art community. In addition to landscape and portrait paintings, other mediums include crafts, jewelry, sculpture, and music. Because of its enduring popularity, there are entire museums and galleries devoted to the Western Art genre, which goes to show just how fascinated people still are of the Old West in America.

Some of the most famous artists of this movement include Charles Russell and Frederic Remington. These two, along with many others, created beautiful and captivating images and scenes of a time and place that many could only dream about. Their works are still being produced today, long after their deaths, usually in the form of printed reproductions.

Howard Terpning is another famous artist whose work focuses on the Old West and Native American culture. His work, like that of his predecessors in the field, is highly reproduced and hung in homes, businesses, and galleries around the world. His most famous works are those depicting different Native Americans in their native lands and communities, specifically the Plains Indians.

Prints are reproductions of works from their original forms, they are usually not considered originals themselves. Reproductions are great because you can get the same look of a piece but without having to pay the high price tag for an original. Prints can be posters, bookplates, or they can be framed and matted for ease of hanging.

Howard Terpning prints often come in a limited number, called editions, with each piece individually numbered and labeled. They are often made in limited editions and sometimes are not resold again for many years, if ever. It is important to note that most prints, as per their nature, are not original works, but are rather reproductions of originals which are copied and the reprinted into different mediums, sizes, etc.
