Ideas for Keeping Your Jewelry Store Secure

By Mark Mahaffey

There are few places that crooks would rather break into than a jewelry store. These stores are filled with small items that are worth thousands of dollars. They are easy to carry and easy to hide. If you own a jewelry store, you are wise to do everything you can to make sure that the security in your store is top notch and equipped with the latest technology.

When it comes to improving your store's security, you have many choices. For instance, you can purchase video cameras. Video surveillance cameras are useful inside your store, making it possible for you to watch your customers closely. But they can also be placed outside your store, so you have a good view of any suspicious activity that may be taking place outdoors.

How you place your cameras is a personal decision. If you place them in plain sight, your customers and visitors will be able to see them and immediately realize that someone is watching them. This knowledge alone may be all that it takes to keep them from attempting to shoplift from you. Another option is to hide them, so that you can watch your patrons without their knowledge.

You can also use access control to make your store more secure. By restricting access to sensitive areas within the store, you can reduce the chances or theft. One sensitive area to secure is the area behind the display cases. Simply install gates to these areas and equip them with card readers. Since the only people who have cards that these readers will recognize are your employees, you will probably have less chance of shoplifting.

Do you have a staff member that can stand at the door and speak to customers as they enter? If so, this is an effective way to reduce crime. If someone enters your store with the intent to steal, they want to be as unnoticed as possible. But if they are spoken to as they come in and forced to make eye contact with someone, they will likely rethink their intention to shoplift from you.

Crooks also like to work in darkness, because they are less likely to be noticed. You should install lots of security lights inside your store and leave them on all night long. Because the store will be so bright on the inside, any activity will be noticed by people passing by outside. Thieves will not want to break in because they will not be able to hide once they get inside.
