Improve Your Business Security With These Tips

By Mark Mahaffey

Did you know that every year, millions of dollars' worth of products are stolen from businesses? It is true. If you own your own retail store, there are criminals out there who would like to steal from you. And criminals are sophisticated these days. They are smart and sneaky, which means that you have to be extra diligent to protect yourself from them.

However, you do not have to just sit back and be at the mercy of shoplifters. You can be proactive and take steps to reduce the likelihood that you will experience additional loss from criminals. The more layers of business security you put into place, the safer you and your bottom line will be.

One of the wisest things you can do is to hire plenty of employees. This is a smart first step in upgrading your business security. It goes without saying that the more employees you have in your store, the better they can watch the customers who come in. Make sure that they greet each customer when they come in.

When customers are greeted upon entering the store, they realize that they have been noticed. Since shoplifters like to do their dirty work unseen, just the knowledge that someone knows they are there may be enough to discourage them from trying to steal from you.

Having a bag check policy is also an important way to improve your business security. You may have people coming into your store with bags that they have gotten from other stores. What they will possibly try to do is to sneak some unpaid items from your store into the bag. If you have a policy that requires your employees to check customers' bags before they leave the store, you can possibly avoid this problem.

Have you ever heard of tag switching? This refers to the practice of putting a lower priced tag on a more expensive item in order to get away with paying a cheaper price for it. Make sure that your business security plan includes training employees to be on the lookout for tag switching by customers.
