Virginia City Ghost Town Spirit Sightings
If the thought of seeing a ghostly apparition gives you shivers of anticipation, rather than prickles down your spine, a visit to this community will give you much to enjoy. The Virginia City ghost town is self-proclaimed to be one of the most haunted communities anywhere in the nation. Visitors and researchers alike have noted paranormal sights, sounds and even smells. Some visitors are brave enough to pay money to stay in places where the spirits are4 said to appear. Historical events are linked to the sightings in some cases, even when they may be more legend than fact.
Peter Larkin - The Storey County Courthouse burned in the Great Fire and was reconstructed in 1876. Larkin's mistress lied to save her lover, but later recanted her story, saying her dead husband was haunting her. The man hung himself after being accused of murder.
St. Mary's Art Center - This structure was originally built in 1864 as St. Mary Louise Hospital. A wheelchair-bound man has been sighted in one of its rooms. A nurse and the man she was trying to save from a hospital fire are two additional spirits which have been seen.
Silver Terrace Cemetery - No ghost tour would be complete with a visit to a cemetery and this particular location has its share of sightings. During the years from 1853 to 1880 there were a number of deadly mining accidents with nearly three hundred reported deaths. At the cemetery, some of the reports include a glowing headstone, the ghost of a girl roaming the headstone rows or various blue lights seen at night.
John Piper - The owner of historic Piper's Opera House has been reported at the window on the second story, as well as in the box seats. Other reports are of a woman who floats across the balcony. The building has been rebuilt two times and is still operating today.
The Mackay Mansion - A young girl known only as Elizabeth has been seen on these premises, as well as six other spirits. One long-haired Asian man, a miner who died in a fire on the grounds of the mansion has been seen by some. Some of those who have seen him say he is warning people of the fire. In the balcony of the mansion, a man smoking a pipe has appeared. A female spirit has been noted at the carriage house, the first floor of the structure and in its dining area.
Rosie and William - Rosie was a prostitute who leaves the scent of her perfume in Room 4 of Gold Hill Hotel and William, a former owner, smokes a cigar in Room 5. He can be felt sitting on the edge of a bed. A little girl is believed to haunt the third floor.
The Washoe - Lena is also a ghost of a prostitute. She has been seen in a blue dress headed up the staircase to the second floor. An explosion on the premises caused at least a dozen deaths, and more recently, a man committed suicide in the latter 20th century.
