Strengths And Flaws Of A Horizontal Directional Drilling

By Janet Moore

In this world, the economy had progressed and technologies became advanced. You could really observe it by observing your city. Tall buildings were made. Different transportations with nice features were created. And many infrastructures were being built. As for that, it really tells that engineering field had absolutely improved. Many techniques are applied by the builders to construct roads, bridges, tunnels and etc. They may also use rock and dirt directional drilling.

Technology of drilling had begun long ago. Around 2000 BC, it was the Chinese who first started to use this to drill wells. They used cable tool procedure to generate salt water. As the demand of oil began to rise in the mid 19th century, the application of this technology had advanced especially now the world had entered the modern era. Many oil industries are now rising. As a result, this practice is needed.

Horizontal Directional Drilling or also called as HDD is a construction trenchless technique in installing pipes on underground. It has a minimal impact on the surface and much modernized compared to the traditional techniques before. Electricity as well as water industries can gain benefits on applying this. Nevertheless, it has its strengths and also weaknesses.

Using HDD will result some clean and faster outcome. While digging holes and installing cables or pipes, it does not disturb the surface or the landscape. For that reason, many would utilize this technique and make this as a great option.

For road constructions, this technique is really useful. Traffic is really heavy when builders are constructing roads. And people dislike staying on their cars when there is traffic. With HDD, road opening consents will not be needed anymore because this work can be done under the road. For that reason, residents will not be bothered with traffic.

When the condition of weather is pretty bad, projects are usually halted and be resumed after many days. That would make the construction longer. HDD has advantage on this because it still can work when the weather condition is bad. If you do not like disruptions, this can be your perfect choice.

Nevertheless, HDD still has its own flaws. The common one is weight material sag or Barite sag. With that condition, it cause poor logging instruments, has some difficulties in sticking pipes or cementing and has no control on wells. The process of this may also be limited the land or soil contains some rocks or cobble. For some people, HDD is quite costly as it will require some special crews and equipment.

The technique is really useful especially for economic growth. However, it gives some disadvantage to the environment. This human activity can affect the wildlife because of its noise pollution. The oil spills can cause dangerous health effects to animals and even humans. The toxic chemicals released by explosion of pipelines and wells could cause pollution to air and water.

Technologies nowadays bring improvement to the lifestyle and benefits for the people and the economy. Without them, the world will still be stuck up on the ancient period without progressing. But overusing them can cause negative impact on the environment. Humans must also be aware with this.
