Useful Facts About Insect Repellent Products

The balancing of several different ecosystems involves insects which play a crucial role. Insects benefit man in many ways and to some extent they make their work easier. The good sides also come with the bad sides as they can be both destructive and a danger to humans and their surroundings. When they become a threat through lethal bites and devastating pets, humans must repulse them from their surroundings.

Insect repellent refer to substance that is applied to various surfaces and places including skins, clothing, interior and exterior spaces. This is done to discourage the insects and arthropods in general from climbing or landing on the sprayed surfaces. The application of repellents usually control and reduce the outbreak of insect-borne diseases such as dengue fever, Lyme disease, malaria, river blindness, bubonic plague, and west Nile fever among many others.

The risk of contracting insect-borne diseases is not the same in all people. Normally, certain places are prone to them in comparison to others. People in urban centers are less prone to such diseases compared to their rural counterparts. Most vector insects of these diseases like locations with water bodies so that they can lay their eggs in water. Such insects include tsetse flies, and mosquitoes. People living close such pools of water have to extra vigilante.

When there is need to buy a repellent, it is important to pay attention to the kind of ingredients contained in them. The ingredients contained in the product determine both its safety and efficiency. It is important to choose a product that is safe and cannot cause medical conditions upon being used. There are also certain ingredients that may preclude people with certain medical conditions from using them.

This means that it is important to understand the ingredients contained in a product prior to purchase. This is very important for people with allergies to certain substance. The efficiency of the ingredients also differs as some are better than others. A product with deet, picaridin, and eucalyptus and oil of lemon are more effective as revealed through researches. Some products may not necessarily contain the mentioned ingredients but instead have different ingredients but of the same class as the mentioned ones.

The concentration of different ingredients also need to be considered, products may be rated differently even though they have the same ingredients. This is a result of the products having the same ingredients but different concentrations. The form in which the product comes in is also a very important factor to consider. Repellents that come in the form of lotion have been proven to be ineffective.

Always read the accompanying application manual carefully before use. A number of them are applied on either clothing or skin. Application of the products on skin beneath clothing is highly discouraged. Avoid excessive application and instead apply enough.

Repellents should not be applied over irritated skin, wounds, or cuts. In other words, the product is meant for external use only, and should not find its way into the body or blood stream. Eyes and mouth should be avoided during application, and one should wash their hands thoroughly after use.
