Important Information On SIPS Construction

By Jeffrey Wood

Because of advancement in technology, there are now new ways of construction of buildings both light commercial structures and residential buildings. During construction, there are various considerations that are often made. Such considerations are such as the cost of the building material and installation, energy efficiency, durability, wear and tear, air circulation, thermoregulation, and aestheticism among others. As a result, SIPS construction materials have become popular since they offer most of these features.

Structural insulated panels which are abbreviated as SIPS have been used for some time although their popularity and demand has grown in the recent past. These materials have overtaken the use of timber products due to the fact that they are easily fixed. On the other hand, these materials can be customized according to your requirements which makes them fit well during construction.

First, these materials can be made in a customized manner according to your taste or preference. This aspect makes them create best fit surfaces and structures as they are made exactly according to the building plan. On the side of aestheticism, structures made from these materials are beautiful and have the high aesthetic characteristic. They are also manufactured with fixing directions and format. This makes fixing work easy and fast.

Since they are available in different colors, they eliminate the need for applying varnish or painting like in timber products. Additionally, the insulated panels are manufactured in a sandwiched mechanism that provides insulation. Since the foam has air spaces, and air is not a good conductor of heat and electricity, the house remains cool during the day and warm at night. Because of this, there are no extreme conditions either too cold or too hot.

On the other hand, these materials are made using a hard casing which makes them strong and can withstand high pressure or objects from the exterior. Fixing of these materials requires glues and screws. Due to this, an error can be corrected easily unlike in bricks where you will have to demolish a large area in order to make corrections. Due to properly formulated fixing areas and partitions, they do not cause wastages like in timber construction which is characterized by unnecessary wastages.

Fixing these materials is not accompanied with wastes as they can be customized. This is not the case when it comes to timber works where a lot of wastes are found. Insulated panels can also be used alongside other construction and building materials. Roofing, flooring or wall installation is some of the applications of these materials.

However, these materials have some shortcomings as well. One of the main shortcomings is that structural insulated panels cannot be used for walls of heavy commercial structures such as skyscrapers. Also, some insulating materials may contain plastics that can break easily. As a result, they must be well guarded.

The materials are made of foam. Therefore, they are flammable when it comes into contact with fire flames. Therefore, in case of fire outbreak, the whole building is likely to burn to ashes unlike in concrete where little attention can kill the fire. They also have a short lifespan. They can also be readily broken by materials that hit the wall surface.
