Important Information Concerning Concrete Waterproofing Admixture

By Daniel King

It costs a person time and resources to construct a structure or a building. This can eventually lead to a huge loss if the construction was not done in an expected way. The loss can be incurred during maintenance, repair or even reconstruction of the whole fixture again. Concrete contains porosity characteristic and water penetrates through it either when draining or by capillarity. This, in turn, causes deterioration and performance failure. That is why concrete waterproofing admixture is used in order to reduce this activity of liquid penetration.

The surface takes in liquids like harmful chemicals, water, and liquid contaminants among others if the activity is not properly carried out. Apart from declining, it is detrimental to both animals and human beings. Therefore, this action needs some materials to block it and fully minimize penetration of any liquid from the surface.

The main function of these materials is to reduce the size and number of the available capillary pores in the structure as well as blocking them. The materials that make these mixtures are also not hydroscopic and therefore the do repel with water when they come into contact. So any leakage present in the surface is blocked by their application.

In this case, the mainly used materials include hydrophobic mixtures or water repellent made of certain oils and chemicals. Petroleum products are used on top of the surface to provide shield since they can minimize porosity.

Powders of finely ground materials are also used to make these materials. The materials are water inert in characteristic, therefore, making them able to densify. This blocks the spaces available hence no water is allowed to pass. Crystalline admixtures are also used in this case because of their hydrophilic characteristic. This characteristic allows densification of the compound when hydrated due to the presence of calcium silicate. This densification fills the pores available blocking any space that water can pass through.

There are also many other materials that are used to provide restriction. However, use or dosing of the admixture varies with the material used and the expected performance or resistance percentage. If the surface to be covered is constantly exposed to water, then the mixture should be applied in a thicker and more concentrated way. Water volume exposed to the surface should also be considered when applying the cover as pressure and force may make water to pass through certain materials if used.

There are very many advantages associated with this activity. First of all, your structure is guaranteed long life and durability. When this is done, no deterioration of the concrete therefore long service. It also offers costs reduction and saving. Costs associated with periodical and regular repairs or reconstruction are eliminated. It also saves time wasted during cyclical repairs and reconstructions.

It also makes one to relax and avoid stress brought fear of collapsing or repair of the fixture. The activity reduces moisture formation, therefore, no mold formation, bacteria breeding, and waterborne defects. Property value is also added when this is done.
