Learn About The Huge Benefits Of The Overmolding Process

By Patricia Nelson

Adding a layer of material over an existing part can significantly improve its performance. For instance, if you have a product with a screw, adding a T-handle would simplify the task for the customer to turn it. In such a case as this, the screw is molded and the material can either be mechanically or chemically attached without additional pieces to make the T-handle. This process is possible through overmolding. This process improves performance on products and increases the durability of the finished products.

The process of adding a molding over a product creates more options on the product. The surface of the product can be changed through different texture, color, and still, important components can be added for a particular client. Depending on the material, the surfaces can either be roughened or smoothened. Also, you can create a spongy surface to improve comfort or a strong surface to improve the durability of the product.

Another reason why adding a molding on a product is important is that you can additional details for a specific consumer. For instance, adding a plastic handle on a screwdriver increases comfort to the user. The handle can have a varying thickness with additional texture for improved grip. The handle may also be made to have a bright color creating ease for the consumer to find it. An over mold may also be added to smoothen corners or the sharp edges of products to avoid injuries when using the products.

As with any manufacturing process, adding a mold on a product must be done in an expert manner. This ensures that the product provides benefits to the user. Taking plastics as an example, adhesives are not used a clear indication that precision must be observed. Also, no gaps should be left when sticking a rigid part with a pliable one since it would compromise its integrity. In fact, any slight imbalance between the pieces would result in a distorted product.

Today, we live in a fast-paced world, where people depend on personal devices. This means they also expect a higher level of comfort as well as integrity from such devices. The molding process has helped to achieve that degree of comfort and integrity and has become a significant facet in the manufacturing industry.

Both the consumers as well as the manufacturers rip more benefits from the molding process on products since they can select from the different colors and designs. The consumers enjoy the comfort and ease on hand-held devices due to the varying textures.

On the other hand, creating a layer of material over a product contributes to the safety of that product. Appliances become resistant to electric shock, and the overlaid material can as well be used to cover the sharp edges. It also increases the longevity of products and tools by keeping them out of water and dust. In the case of vibrations, the overlaid material becomes an effective shock absorber.

Generally, the process of overlaying material on devices has initiated huge development in the plastic sector. Various applications in different sectors have been modernized by the overlaying process. Such sectors are such as medical, military and safety fields.
