Alternatives That Can Be Used To The Prisoner Seat Belt

By Linda Smith

There is a lot of interrelation amongst the officers and prisoners, and sometimes this has led to the officers exposing themselves to risk. When they are being transferred, there are cases that have been recorded where officers have been hurt, and the jailbirds have fled. As a result, there are numerous modifications that have made to the law and their immediate surroundings to ensure the safety of the prisoners. One of the changes is the use of the prisoner seat belt technique.

Under normal circumstances seat belts are used for crash protection hence the belts should have fastening retractors so as to give room for passengers to be able to move without any hindrance returns to its normal position keeping one locked up. However, the inmates use a different technique to prevent any danger that may be posed to the officers.

A manual fastening system is used which offers crash protection as well as mitigating the possible risk of endangering the officers. The system is positioned to keep them lying down, usually, on the back seat. Thus, it reduces moving freely as it keeps them intact. However, medics have raised concerns as the technique often causes handcuff neuropathy. The condition damages the nerves on the wrist.

However, several alternatives may be used to enhance security. First you may tightly seat them. Ensure you tightly handcuff the hands and move them to the front. It reduces the possible chance of the inmate sliding to the front. Also, it mitigates any possible chance of escaping.

Hooding is also another technique that may be used. It works by putting a hood over the prisoners head. This may be used against the handcuffs and belting reducing any chances of movements and while driving it is advised to make many turns so as to confuse them. The hood makes the senses of the prisoner to shut off making him freeze and not be aware of his surrounding. Also, blindfolding may also be used.

Another technique is the vesto strip which is two strips. One used to fasten the chest area and the other the lower limb part. These strips produce noise once there are any movements hence if the inmates move you can notice and keep a close eye on them for any suspicious movements.

A boy strap may also be essential. You will place it around the prisoner and also on the front chair. It pins the hand well between the chair and the body. You may also consider wobbling. At this moment, you will tether the inmates legs to the thighs using a rope. However, frequent checks should be made to ensure they are not too restrained.

Inspection mirrors can be used as it eases the officers work when it comes to checking up on the inmate without their knowledge. It should be placed strategically especially during transfers so that the inmates can be observed and if you notice anything suspicious, pull over in a safe area and inspect with immediate effect.

In conclusion back is a must have when you are on a journey with hardcore prisoners. You are advised not to travel alone, and the one is accompanying you should seat at the back of the prisoner. If the backup is not in the same vehicle, there ought to be in another vehicle behind you, in the event you need any assistance or help.
