The main objective leading to massive increase in the shipping transportation is the growth of world trade.However, the technological and institutional factors had an important role. Due to the development in communication and information technology the cost of accessibility and mobility reduced. This allowed the innovation of new network and their connections which later led to an increase in production of goods, hence facilitating the offshoring and outsourcing of this goods.

Due to the rise in demand, larger ships that could carry bulk cargo had to be built to solve this problem. It also led to the technological advances as well as organizational improvements in the management of ports.This included the use of containers which was the greatest innovation in this industries and hence the demand of goods needed could be met easily.

The shipping is not only important to convey goods, but it is also essential when it comes to the creation of jobs. Most jobless people around oceans and seas secured jobs out of this development. This improved the living standards of most individuals as they can now put food on the table. Consequently, the economy of those particular countries improved.

The shipping of goods has also promoted the development of industries in third world countries. This is because it ensures a steady supply in terms of goods exported. It also brings the connection of different countries hence promoting tourism that is usually a benefit to the economy and wealth of a particular country.
