By Stefanie Horton

When it comes to working as a consultant, there are many areas in which individuals can do so. While some locate work through large contracting and consulting firms, others work directly with companies. Depending on the type business, responsibilities of business consultants in Atlanta can range from managing an existing office to assisting with establishment of a new business model or company.

First time consultants often work alongside company employees to obtain guidance and knowledge necessary to provide services to a number of different type business models. The type business an individual will serve over time is often dependent on the business and industry in which the individual obtained training. After which, individuals can better utilize a variety of tools to help pinpoint issues and understand each client on a case by case basis.

Consultants often work at multiple locations whether a contractor, freelancer or direct hire. Whether local or long distance, travel is often a requirement for many working in this field. As such, those with small children or other responsibilities may want to consider these realities before moving forward with college, on-the-job training or accepting a position.

Once trained, consultants often leverage a number of decisions and technology solutions associated with business type or industry. The consultant then tracks progress based on actual performance reports and develops status reports on an ongoing basis.

Another part of the process for those wishing to work in this area is to develop strong leadership skills. After which, most find incorporating strong technical, analytical and communication skills into company operations far easier than others without a similar skill-set. Whether working for a company as a contractor, freelancer or direct hire, travel can often be a regular event in these type positions. When working with large corporations with offices world-wide, it is essential that consultants carry an updated passport. Whereas, those taking any form of public transportation, renting a vehicle or staying at a hotel often need at the minimum a drivers license though most will also accept passports as valid identification.

As with responsibilities, qualifications for becoming a consultant can vary worldwide. Most often, a well known company will require a minimum of a Masters degree. In some cases, smaller companies may hire an individual and provide on-the-job training. While this is the case, these opportunities are few and far between. A consultant is ultimately going to be part of a team. Whether working through a consulting agency or direct hire, the individual is often the first contact for employers when issues arise. As such, being a consultant is a job that is not focused in one specific area. Although, as each assignment is unique, most often a company the consultant is assigned to will provide basic information and training related to the industry.
