Why You Need A Commercial Fire System

By Mark Mahaffey

Many people think of home fire safety when they think of fire safety. But in reality, business fire safety is just as important. People tend to spend almost as much time at their jobs as they do in their homes. This means that it is critical to have a good commercial fire system in place in your business.

As you begin pulling together the different pieces of your commercial fire security plan, there are some various aspects that you should think about. For instance, in your office, make sure that all employees are aware of what the fire escape route is and how to navigate it. In addition, your building must have at least two exit doors.

These fire doors are there for a reason, because they are the way employees will escape if there is a fire. If these doors are blocked, it will be very hard for people to get outside in time, so make it a practice to keep the doors clear whenever anyone is inside your building. Check to make sure there are no desks, boxes, books or garbage cans sitting in the way of the doors.

Have you purchased fire extinguishers for your business? These can be a big help in keeping small fires from turning into large, out of control fires. Just be sure that you teach all your staff members the correct way to use them. You could hold training sessions every month, just to make sure everyone knows how to use them.

Sprinkler systems are also a good idea. When you install sprinkler systems, you can have them connected to your fire alarm system. That way, if your alarm system detects a fire, it can automatically turn the sprinklers on, which can keep the fire under control until the fire department arrives.

Another important part of a commercial fire system is having quality smoke and heat detectors. Make sure these are checked regularly for fresh batteries and in-tact wiring. Many fires could have been prevented if the smoke detectors had been properly maintained. Consider asking someone in your company to be responsible for the bi-yearly upkeep of the smoke detectors in your building.
