Having A Lunch With People From Work: Why Do it?

By George Dodson

If you are looking to build a good relationship at work then a lunch break would be the best time to do it. This not only helps you acquire new friends at your work place but having to do this can also increase your chances of getting a promotion. You would also feel more at ease and convenient at the office if most of the people you are working with are your friends.

Eating lunch with people you don't know from the office is actually not that easy. You will need to come up with a way to invite or have them invite you over for a lunch. Also, you will need to think of a good topic in which you can talk about.

Exactly what is the reason behind why you need to lunch out with office mates?

In the US, it is already quite customary to be having lunch with co-workers since they know its importance. Other people or companies from across the globe however do not know this. The purpose of interacting with others and talking about things not related to work is the main purpose of lunch meetings, meetings or get-togethers. During working hours, we are not allowed to talk about personal matters as well as interact with other colleagues if it is not about work. Thus with the lunch break, any employee is able to do pretty much whatever he or she likes and can talk about whatever he or she would want to talk about. With this, co-workers are able to establish a bond with others.

Not only are lunch breaks excellent if you want to bond with your team, it is also a great opportunity to gather new friends. As many people already know, a work environment is prone to stress. Too much work is inevitable on the job and it would simply be reassuring to have someone help you in these times. The best solution to this problem is a friend - friends in the office that are willing to share your burden. We can therefore say that making friends out of colleagues during lunch breaks is really important.

So what to talk about during lunch breaks?

By now, you should probably understand that lunch break meetings with office mates are important. Thus, let us find out the best ways how to start a conversation. Among those topics and subjects you would want to use in your conversations with your colleagues at lunch breaks are those that are not linked to work or work-related. Lunch breaks are supposed to be a time where the body and mind would relax without having to be interrupted by anything that is work-related.

Also, you will also need to consider your topic with regard to the type of people you are trying to interact with. As much as possible, try to be sensitive with what sort of topics they would find interesting. The subject of sports, athletics or fitness would be a great subject or topic for people who seem fit or sporty.

Starting a conversation is actually quite easy provided that you have a good topic or subject. As you progress through your conversation, introduce yourself and try to tell a bit of details about yourself. To have an actual exchange of thoughts, be sure to pass the ball to them - do not do all the talking.
