The Advantage Of An ADN Degree

By Hedrick Lepsch

Deciding on a specific career may seem like a daunting task, but when you know the benefits of receiving an RN degree, the decision is practically made. For people who want to help others and devote their lives to healing the sick or injured, nursing is the best career path. With a nursing degree, you'll be a positive contribution to those around you by uplifting morale and by changing people's lives, and in the process gain confidence and high self-esteem within yourself. Nurses enjoy many advantages and benefits they possess within their career.

The major advantage of seeking a career of a licensed practical nurse is that allows you enter the nursing field while continuing to work towards getting a higher nursing degree. It is common for a licensed practical nurse to become an RN. Many enjoy the fact that it takes less time to become an LPN than a RN. On average, it takes about one year to become an LPN. A RN must have an associates or bachelor's degree and must pass all required nursing exams.

As an LPN you can more quickly secure a job and, if you choose, continue towards a higher position as an RN. There are many bridge programs available that allow for a quick transition from an LPN to an RN. A LPN to RN bridge program can allow you to take necessary courses online. As a busy LPN trying to move up the ladder to an RN this program can make a big difference as it allows for flexibility. Some programs are more affordable than taking another route to a higher education.

Annual salary may not be the top consideration when deciding between an LPN (licensed practical nurse) and an RN (registered nurse), but the difference is significant. In 2010, the annual median salary for an RN was $64,690 and $40,380 for an LPN. Yes, an RN degree does require more time, but the payoff is at least 20,000 more each year. It may seem easier to become an LPN because it does not require as much schooling and subsequently does not cost as much, but in addition to a higher salary, RNs enjoy so much more in their career.

Along with job security and good pay, another advantage is the flexibility the career provides. A licensed practical nurse is needed during all hours of the day. Part-time licensed practical nurses enjoy the flexibility as it allows them to have a second job. Flexibility in schedule also makes it easier to attend school to get a higher nursing degree.

With so many options, it can be difficult to decide the best route towards a nursing degree. An ADN degree is a cost effective, quick option that provides you with comparable starting pay. Make sure to do your research and find a program that will fit your lifestyle in terms of location, tuition, and accreditation.
