Manufacturing Is Easier When Getting Your Parts From A Baltimore Machine Shop

By Grace Rivas

Every manufacturer needs quality parts of a certain size, shape and material that is not easy to find on the open market. Your engineers have designed the best product for your clients and it is up to you to find the pieces that go together to make it a reality. A Baltimore machine shop is in the best position to provide these parts, designed and manufactured to your specifications, for these applications.

Many of the machine shops have gone away, however, many are still available for this work. Even with the new technologies, such as 3D printing and extrusion that has create specialty items, these shops fill a vital role. Looking into what is needed for the manufacture of the item you produce will indicate what can be gained from a relationship with a good shop.

Quite a number of these shops are wholly owned business units of larger manufacturing concerns. They will often sell off part of their excess capacity to other companies, occasionally in the same industry. Some of these shops will be stand alone firms who will produce for anyone and some of them only work on specialized parts for certain industries.

A very good item that is often made in a machine shop is the case parts and bodies for such things as appliances or computers. The material, such as alloyed aluminum, steel or tin will come in the form of a roll. This makes it easier to handle and will be accommodated by the many machines needed for this part of fabrication.

One of the first things will be the cutting of the proper length and width. This can be followed by the punch press. These extremely heavy units will form the recesses, cut the holes and, often, perform the threading of the many screw holes necessary for final finishing. These punch presses will do the work on the flat pieces and personnel will move them to other machines for other work.

The many bends in the piece can be effected by using a metal brake. This is done so that it will form a case without much trouble at all. This box will then be able to have all other components installed in it, by your personnel, during final assembly. It has been formed according to your specifications and will work as planned.

Other activities performed in these valuable shops will be lathing. This is taking a piece of metal and making it into a shaft of the proper size, shape and with the appropriate knurling and or threads. This will also provide a process for the polishing of a piece. The shop will also grind, cut, burnish, thread, bend, etch, along with a whole host of other activities to make your job of assembly even easier and quicker.

Finding just the right part can be frustrating when looking through a catalog or even online. Seeing it on paper or a monitor, designed by the professionals who work in a Baltimore machine shop, will help. It will tell you they know what you are looking for and can make it happen for you.
