Construction Cleanup Is A Constant Job

By Lora Jones

One of the most important elements of the construction site for anything is the ability to keep it clean and safe. All personnel, tradesmen and vendors to the site need to make safety their number one concern, however, debris, material spread all over and the general disarray is always a problem. The crew that is hired to make sure the construction cleanup is happening is vital to the cause.

The many different things they will be doing is based, largely, on where the site is in relation to the start and completion dates. In the early days of the site, this crew will be picking up the various debris that blows in. The packing material is, often, simply dropped or thrown down and needs to find its way into the dumpster. Heavy gloves will be the order of the day and, possibly, a truck or trailer will be needed for this stage.

The work proceeds to the pouring of the cement slab. The cleaning crew will be the first ones to deal with this as they must grind or sand that slab into a smooth surface. The vacuums will be used to get all of the dust from this operation and the resultant floor will then have to be kept swept.

Because of the various union rules in most of the United State, only one trade will be able to work, inside, at a time. The clean crew will go in during and after each trade to deal with the debris from each work session. Each trade will make their own particular type of mess and the crew will have to be flexible in taking care of each one before the next group of workers come in.

The electricians, for example, will bring in packing materials and scrap wire and connectors which are simply thrown on the floor. The plumbers may be next and they will have cut pieces of pipe and more packing materials. The pieces of conduit that either crew will bring in will make short work of a vacuum hose if the cleaning crew is using one for this clean up.

Each of the many different steps will require the attention of the cleaning crew. Floors, trash and anything left over from the previous workmen. It is a very fluid and flexible schedule these professionals will need to follow. There will be times they are not doing much of anything. A few minutes later, they will be involved in a detail cleaning of something that must be brought in and installed within the structure.

In the last phase of the construction project, more actual cleaning is performed. Finer brooms are used in the main areas. Vacuums are brought in more and more as door and window tracks are cleared of debris. Glass is beginning to be cleaned and air ducts are nearing completion for the cleaning that must happen there.

The last thing they will be involved in will be what is called a punch card type cleaning. This is the small detail that was missed during the finishing phase of construction. This construction cleanup will consist of fixing small holes in walls and black marks on the same surfaces. Cleaning the toilets, bathtubs and kitchen sinks will be in this part of the job. The cabinets will be cleaned out as well as the sinks and, in this way, they are simply performing the duties that a regular custodial firm will be handling.
