Get Up When Life Knocks You Down: Three Success Stories Remembered by James Malinchak

By Troy Dickson

"Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life and when it comes, hold your head high, look it squarely in the eye and say, 'I will be bigger than you. You cannot defeat me.'"-Ann Landers

As you go through life, you'll be faced with many roadblocks. Obstacles will knock you down. What you do or do not achieve in life will highly depend on your willingness to get up when life knocks you down. You'll be knocked down in life because it is a part of life and happens to everyone. Will you stand up? Those who get up when they're knocked down and those who constantly strive to overcome obstacles succeed in life.

The next time you get knocked down if you begin thinking about quitting and giving up, remember a few of these people:

The horrifying experience of Jackie Pflug is one of the most inspirational stories you will ever hear. Jackie was a passenger on Egyptian Air Flight 648 a few years ago. The flight was going on as expected when suddenly the plane was hijacked by terrorists. During the hijacking, one of the terrorists shot her in the head and left her for dead. Jackie said she was not ready to die and said she did not stop fighting for her life. Even when the chances of living seemed impossible, she said still never gave up. She truly believes that her determination to live is one of the main reasons she miraculously survived. Jackie now spends her time traveling the country inspiring others to overcome obstacles in their lives.

In September 1994, Heather Whitestone went on to win the crown of Miss America, becoming the first person with a physical disability to win the title in the pageant's history. Although her disability presented her with many obstacles, she never quit, and she never gave up on pursuing her dreams.

Jim Abbott was a major league baseball player. What you may not know is that he has only one hand. Most people would give up pursuing their dream of playing baseball if they had only one hand. It would have been easy for Jim to feel sorry for himself and give up. But not Jim. He was not going to let this barrier to stand in the course of his dream of playing professional baseball. He looked at the good qualities that he had and focused his attention on accomplishing his goal. Jim Abbott went on to become a the top pitcher in professional baseball.

In September 1994, Heather Whitestone went on to win the crown of Miss America, becoming the first person with a physical disability to win the title in the pageant's history. Although her disability presented her with many obstacles, she never quit, and she never gave up on pursuing her dreams.

These 3 people never let the obstacles in front of them stop them from believing and achieving. They marched forward to be among the most inspirational people in the world, yet we see people all the time that allow the tiniest obstacles become the largest challenges. We get to choose whom we want to be in our lives. Whom do you choose to be?

"Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go."~ Unknown
