ISO 9000 is a set of standards for quality control in a business environment from the International Organization for Standardization, which is made up of standardization bodies from over 130 countries the world over. ISO 9000 describes three quality systems. They are ISO 9001, 9002 and 9003. ISO 9001 is the body of requirements an organization should concentrate on if their processes have to do with design of a product, production and building, installation, and maintenance of that fabrication. ISO 9002 is for those organizations not involved in design and production of any fabricated products. ISO 9003 is for businesses that do not focus on any of the processes mentioned in ISO 9001 but it does entail ensuring that the end fabrication or service of a business meets requirements through inspection and examining. An establishment can choose to be certified in one of these three quality arrangements.

What Certification Means

Being certified in ISO 9000 means that a company takes quality management sincerely and that quality control requirements are met within the company. The quality control systems must be used in order to be considered for certification and methods and improvements must be heeded. Many organizations will employ an outside consultant to aid in the endeavor. A certification group will subsequently come in that is recruited by the company seeking the certification to audit acquiescence with ISO 9000 and its prevalent requirements. If there are any problems, they must be corrected before certification is granted. If a certificate is granted, it ought to be maintained through regular audits.

Becoming ISO 9000 certified can open up an entirely new customer base for a company since many clients will not even consider working with an establishment that is not ISO 9000 certified. ISO 9000 certification can help increase revenue in this manner. Procedures will also become betteras the certification requirements are used in an organization. These processes will become consistent in the way they operate as they will begin to run the same way each time. If there are some issues, they will be fixed and kept from happening again. This also helps new staff members as they have a proven system of performing a task.

ISO 9000 certification has several advantages, from gaining a leg up in a global industry to more centralized advantages such as better process controls. ISO 9000 certification can benefit any category of company, as long as it is taken seriously and done right.
